About Bolivia

Located in the heart of South America, Bolivia offers a wide range of landscapes that amaze tourists with their biodiversity. From the Andes Mountains and their volcanoes, passing through the Altiplano, salt flats, and Lake Titicaca, all the way to the Amazon Jungle and the Gran Chaco.

Bolivia is a land of contrasts, with high mountains, vast valleys, and expansive Amazon plains. It features natural, cultural, archaeological, architectural, artistic, and folkloric attractions.

Sixty-five percent of the territory consists of lowlands with a warm, humid climate averaging 25°C and elevations between 200 and 400 meters above sea level (masl). Fifteen percent of the area is valleys and yungas, with a temperate and dry climate, averaging 15°C and altitudes between 1,000 and 3,000 masl. Twenty percent is the Altiplano, where temperatures range from 0° to 10°C, with an average altitude of 3,500 masl.

The cultural richness and ancestral traditions of a multicultural nation with 37 official languages stand out, among which Spanish, Aymara, and Quechua are the most prominent.

Bolivia shares borders with Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay to the east and southeast, Argentina to the south, Chile to the southwest, and Peru to the northwest. The Plurinational State of Bolivia comprises nine departments: La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Tarija, Pando, Beni, and Santa Cruz.

According to the latest census of 2024, Bolivia has 11,312,620 inhabitants.

The official currency is the boliviano, though the U.S. dollar is also widely used for various transactions. Bolivian banknotes come in denominations of Bs.10, 20, 50, 100, and 200, while coins are available in smaller values up to Bs.5, Bs.2, and 50 cents.

Catholicism is the predominant religion among Bolivians, though there is freedom of worship.

Entry into Bolivia is possible via several overland routes, including Desaguadero and Copacabana from Peru; Villazón, Bermejo, and Yacuiba from Argentina; Tambo Quemado, Pisiga, Bolivar, and Avaroa from Chile; Puerto Suárez, Guayaramerín, and Cobija from Brazil; and via international flights to airports in Santa Cruz and La Paz.
